Film Festival

THE 8th ANNUAL GUTV STUDENT FILM FESTIVAL

Contact: Catherine Knopf, Chair

at filmfest@gutvonline.com

Georgetown is a community that embraces student initiative, imagination, and creativity, and student filmmaking is an important medium through which to express these characteristics. GUTV is responsible for the creation of the Film Festival as an enriching venue for showcasing student filmmaking talent that would otherwise have no forum. In the past, every single screening has been sold out, as the demand for tickets and both the number and quality of student submissions continue to grow. Essentially, the Festival seeks to unite our campus through film.

In the Festival’s 8th year, the Executive Committee is working to make this year’s Festival an unforgettable red-carpet event. Once again, student filmmakers will have the opportunity to showcase their work in front of the attentive and supportive eyes of their peers, professors, and alumni. All Georgetown students and alumni are eligible to submit a film, and all films must be under 20 minutes in length. Please contact filmfest@gutvonline.com for any further information about submitting a film or about the Festival in general.

Editorial

Editing is one of the last and most essential steps to producing television shows. It is the the responsibility of the editing team to make recorded programs ready for broadcast, which includes everything from adding captions to correcting the color of the picture that will appear on screen. In addition to these essential technical duties, editors also make certain creative choices that are reflected in the overall quality of the program.

The two editing suites in the GUTV office are equipped with Final Cut Pro, a program that is used by many professional television editors. As editors become accustomed to working on the computers, they are assigned to projects to finalize on their own. Training consists of one-on-one office tutorials with the Editorial Director, as well as classes at the Gelardin Media Center.

Examples of projects include:
- Live programming (talk shows, debates, news, cooking shows, etc.)
- Sports games
- Speakers and events at Gaston Hall
- Film Festival submissions
- Commercials

News

News shows is a program that does global, national, local and campus news 5 days a week. The program usually runs around 30 minutes and airs multiple times throughout the day.

News Producer: The news producer is in charge of the filming process. We will teach you how to use the equipment and it will be your responsibility to make sure the show looks good. Be honest with your anchors as you are their director. A show usually takes about 20 minutes to film.

Anchors: Anchors usually work in teams of two but must also be prepared to go on air themselves.

News writer: News writing is done the morning of the taping and the night before. It involves going to the websites such as CNN.com and WSJ.com and making sure to get the biggest news stories. Look at the campus paper and talk to people about what is going on around Georgetown. YOU decide what the campus gets as their news. It usually takes about an hour to write 10 minutes of news.

We are trying to make news bigger than ever and anytime you can offer will definitely help!

If you are interested in getting involved, please email me!

Sports

About Dan Long:

I am a senior American Studies major. I transferred to Georgetown last year from Providence College. I have grown up my entire life as a Hoya fan and had my older brother and sister attend the Hilltop (’97 & ’99). I am a huge sports fan with aspirations to become a professional sports play-by-play announcer after graduation in May. I joined GUTV last fall and immediately got involved in the sports department, taking upon the duties as the play-by-play announcer for GU football in the fall and men’s lacrosse in the spring.

About GUTV Sports Department:

As GUTV itself is in the midst of a renaissance, I want to move the sports department to heights it has never seen before. That means more sports broadcasts, sports-themed programming, complete access to the GU athletic department, and a professional quality in presentation and sports reporting that can be seen on the major networks. Sure, my goals seem lofty, but I aim high and I want the best.
This fall GUTV will again be covering the football home games on campus. We will be taping the games and then playing them on GUTV on a taped delay. I want to add features such as graphics, commercials, intros, endings, etc. to our broadcasts to make it look fantastic. I also plan on cutting highlights from the games and putting those highlights aside for a year-ending compilation video and for a sports show I am in the middle of creating.

The show I plan on starting shortly will be called Hoya Paranoia, a take on the name given during the golden age of Georgetown basketball to the team in the 1980s. With this show I hope to have weekly interviews with guests such as coaches, athletes, fans, and members of the athletic department. We will have highlights, and student features on the show as well. This show will reach out to your fellow students and will connect everyone better on campus with their Hoya sports teams.

What YOU can do within GUTV Sports:

We will need people for the following positions as of right now:
· Camera People (Will film Hoya sporting events)
· Editors (Will edit film footage from Hoya sporting events)
· Reporters (Once we get our programming running we’ll need people to report on teams and Hoya sporting events)
